Stylish Man of the Week: Joe Jonas

Lots going on in the world of fashion so it was hard to choose just one person to be stylish man of the week, but after getting a Details cover, the award has to go to teenage girls favourite and boy band superstar Joe Jonas.

Joe Jonas on Details
Joe left his bothers at home and showed that it’s not just Tom Ford that can work a tan and a unbuttoned white shirt.  This classic look never goes out of style and shows that this Disney pin up is one to keep your fashion eye on.

The Strokes Style

I've been a fan of The Strokes music and style for a long time and I always think Julian Casablancas is one of the best dressed guys in music so I was excited to read this fun article from the The Huffington Post about The Strokes and dressing like a rock star.

The article talks about 13 ways to dress like a Rock Star.  Click here to read them and see which lessons you have already learned.  I have to say I'm guilty of 1,2,3,4,8,9!  How about you?

Can’t Live Without: Cardigans

The one item of clothing in my wardrobe I can’t live without has to be cardigans.  I could wear them anywhere, any day, anytime.  I embraced them a few years ago when Mark Ronson was doing the geek chic look and have continued to work them into different looks each season to put my own style into the trend.

My favourite Marc Jacobs Cardigan from Marc by Marc Jacobs A/W 09/10

Why?

Knitwear can add a quirky twist and some texture to a simple look that could be in danger of being bland without it.   It can pull the look together and a must have if you want to work the Spring/Summer 2011 preppy trend.

H&M S/S 2011

How to wear the look

Go for fine knits in the summer and wear it unbuttoned over a t-shirt.  To be on trend for spring 2011 an oversized cardigan and a loose fitting t-shirt will put you on par with the fashion elite.  In the evening go for a fitted cut that can be worn over a shirt and tie. In the chilly winter months hit go for a chunky knit and wear it with everything!

Where to buy?

My favorite designer brands for cardigans are Marc Jacobs and Paul Smith.  All Saints and Fred Perry are a good option if you are looking for top end high street and H&M and Topman are perfect if you don’t want to break the bank.

Light Denim Shirts

H&M Shirt
Spring has sprung and it’s time to ditch the dark denim and brighten it up with some light denim shirts. The high street is full of them at the moment and with H&M offering one for less than £10 there is no excuse to not leave the dark denim in the back of the closet till autumn.

How to wear this look

This wardrobe staple can easily be worn many ways. Do the double denim look with jeans or add a denim jacket if you want to triple it. Add a gingham tie for a more polished look or throw it over a striped t-shirt for an effortlessly cool look.

Preppy College Look

Ralph Lauren Spring/Summer 2011
Preppy College kids are on trend this spring.  The preppy look is as style staple but this season, think more cool college kids than Ivy League professor.

Getting the Look

Take the fashion staple, khaki chinos as the starting point and work from there.  Smarten the look up with some brown brogues and your favorite cardigan and you have a look that can take you from the office to an after work dinner date.

For a relaxed weekend look add a sporty element with some converse and a varsity jacket.

Varsity Jacket

Why

Topman Ark Chinos
Chinos are a wardrobe must have and have never been more in style.  They make a stylish alternative to jeans without looking like you are trying too hard.

Brown Brogues have made a huge comeback in the last few seasons and they are not about to go anywhere.  Invest in a good pair and they will finish off any look with style.

Converse, for many men, are the default footwear choice. But they can become more of a style statement if they are worn with the right look.  Think of matching a red hi-top with a red varsity jacket.

Make the look your own

If you are worried about looking like you have stepped out of a 90’s Ralph Lauren ad then mix the Preppy look up.  Go for some ark cut chinos, Topman has a good selection, and wear it with an oversized t-shirt and some boots.  This will say indie kid more than college boy.

Rugged Trend: Fisherman

A key trend for Spring/Summer 2011 is the fisherman.  This rugged style can look good on all guys as the trend is as much as about function as it is about statement.

Getting the Look

The easiest way to work this trend is to take a nautical striped t-shirt that came through last summer and team it with train spotters favourite and this years fashion choice, an anorak.   Add your favourite beanie and you have taken this trend and put your own style stamp on it.

Why?

The anorak is perfect for keeping you dry during April showers and gives a relaxed summer festival look, even if you are just visiting your local park.

A stripped t-shirt is a key item that can see you through to autumn and works well with other looks too.  H&M have some stylish ones for about £6.99 so it won’t break the bank to be stylish this summer.

Variations on the Look

The fisherman look works well with knitwear too.  Think cable knits or stripes.  Look to students’ favourite Jack Willis for a chunky fisherman knit that can make a cold spring day or a chilly summer night a stylish occasion.

If you worry about looking like a scruffy student, slick the fisherman up with some slim jeans for a contemporary street look like Gossip Girl dandy Ed Westwick has.

Ed Westwick takes the Fisherman trend and slicks it up for a relaxed street look.
